Where are the pilots -FAQ

Does this service cost anything?
No - The service is for free!! The only thing to do is: Register! You get your access within 24 hours.

What is 'wherearethepilots.com' for?
It is useful for paraglider pilots, hanglider pilots or other pilot groups who have 'SPOT Satellite GPS Messengers' (or 'SPOT Connect Devices'). On the webpage 'wherearethepilots.com' you can present all the live tracks of your group on one single webpage (Google Maps).

Why should I use this service and not the SPOT shared page on findemespot.com?
Because you can show live tracks from a SPOT group on one single webpage. This is not possible with your personal account on 'findmespot.com'. On findemespot.com you can only show your owned SPOT devices and no devices of your pilot friends - on 'wherearethepilots.com' you can manage all links from a group and bring the whole group or several smaller teams on one single Google Maps page.

Wich devices are supported?
At present time (January 2012) we only support the livetracking devices 'SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger' and 'SPOT Connect'. All other devices which are based on mobile phone coverage like 'Flymaster Livetracker' or Smart Phone Apps (e.g. Gaggle) are not supported. With the 'SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger' you are not dependent on a mobile radio network. SPOT Messenger works on a satellite base... a big PRO!
When you own a 'SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger' and when you set up your 'Public Shared Page' on your SPOT account simply join a pilot group or a club who uses our service. Or build your own pilot group and apply for a new account! Please note that all of the pilots in your group know this site and its livetracking link - and every pilot must know that he/she appears on this site as a member of a livetracking group!

Where do I can register my account on wherearethepilots.com?
Use the link in the menu 'register' on top. You get your access within 24 hours.

How many pilots can I fill in my account?
After the registration you get a personal account. You fill the list with 20 members and their SPOT links. The system checks the links and puts the pilots and the links in a database. Your list matches with your personal 'Client Code'. You can activate or deactivate single pilots in the list as an additional feature.

How do I see 'My Pilots List' on Google Maps?
Set up and/or update your pilots in your account list. Save the list with a click on the button 'update pilots'. After that you click on 'My Pilots List' on the list page. After that you see 'My Pilots List' which will be generated.
Tick all the pilots you want to be shown (please note: some may have no Track-Points) on one Google Maps page. Then click on 'Show Pilots on Google Maps'. After the map is shown, you can set this Google Map as a 'Favorite' in your browser. However, this is a good way to spot different pilots or favorite teams on separate pages. The next day you only open your "Favorite" in the browser and you immediately see the present tracks of this pilot or team on Google Maps.

How does a link 'My Pilots List' look like?
The 'My Pilots List' link shows a list of all activated pilots in your account. The Link from the 'My Pilots List' looks like this one:
http://www.wherearethepilots.com/php/MyPilotsList.php?CC=DEMO
http://www.wherearethepilots.com/php/MyPilotsList.php?: This is the static part from the webaddress of 'Where are the pilots' Live-Tracking pilots list.
CC=DEMO: DEMO is the 'Client Code', instead of 'DEMO' enter your 'Client Code'. Save the link 'My Pilots List' as a bookmark in your browser!

How does a link 'Show Live-Tracking' look like?

The link from the 'Show Live-Tracking' looks like this one:
http://www.wherearethepilots.com/php/ShowPilots.php?CC=DEMO&1=on&2=on&Anzeigen=Show+Live-Tracking
&1=on&2=on: 1 and 2 are pilots 1 and 2 from 'My Pilots List', '=on' means active and selected. Instead of using pilot numbers you can use '&ShowAll' to show all active pilots from 'My Pilots List'.

How can I change the link 'Show Live-Tracking'?
http://www.wherearethepilots.com/php/ShowPilots.php?: This is the static part from the webaddress of 'Where are the pilots' Live-Tracking
CC=DEMO: DEMO is the 'Client Code', instead of 'DEMO' enter your 'Client Code'
&1=on&2=on: 1 and 2 are pilots 1 and 2 from 'My Pilots List', '=on' means active and selected. You should use at least two active pilots from 'My Pilots List'. Instead of using pilot numbers you can use '&ShowAll'
&ShowAll: Shows all pilots from 'My Pilots List' (all active pilots)
&Anzeigen=Show+Live-Tracking: not necessary, generated when you go over 'My Pilots List'

Is a link available especially for smart phone browsers?
Yes. Use http://www.wherearethepilots.com/php/ShowPilots_Mobi.php?CC=DEMO&ShowAll
Instead of 'CC=DEMO' you enter your Client Code.

What is my 'Client Code'?
When you register for an account you get a 'Client Code' (from two up to four letters). This code is the identifier of your personal list. Pilots in your list match with your client code.
